Holidays Increase Risks of Accidents - Stay Safe This Fourth of July

Posted By Boswell & Dunlap LLP || 29-Jun-2016

The Fourth of July weekend is approaching, and our legal team would like to wish everyone throughout Bartow and Polk County a safe holiday weekend. As attorneys who have served this community for over a century, we know this time of year can be a busy one, and that the risks of accidents and injuries tends to increase.

This being the case, our team would like to take the time to remind folks about common dangers and provide some tips on how to avoid them.

  • Auto Accidents – An increase in traffic during holidays raises the risk of car accidents, and so can an increase in impaired drivers on the road. Fourth of July weekend is a time for celebration, and for many that means celebrating with drinks. As a result, drunk driving accidents and injuries spike significantly during this time. Do your part by drinking responsibly or planning a ride.
  • Fireworks – The safest way to enjoy fireworks is at a licensed show. However, if you plan on using some of your own, make sure they are legal in your area and that you use them responsibly. Always use fireworks in an open area away from structures and other flammable items and watch closely if children are nearby.
  • Water Safety – Cooling off at the beach, lake, or pool is a common Fourth of July pastime. If you’re enjoying the water, make sure to swim in designated areas near lifeguards and to never swim alone. Supervise children carefully and familiarize yourself with CPR and pool safety should the need for quick action ever arise.
  • Grill Safety – What holiday weekend would be complete without a barbeque? If you’re planning on grilling, please do so safely. Inspect grills for leaks or breaks prior to use and clean grills after each session, use grills outdoors, and avoid overuse of lighter fluid. If children are nearby, keep a close eye on the grill and their whereabouts.

As personal injury lawyers in Polk County, we see a lot of these types of accidents during the summer and during various holidays. While many accidents can be prevented with cautionary preparation, some cannot – especially when they are caused by the negligence or wrongful acts of others.

At Boswell & Dunlap LLP, we fight for injured victims and families who suffer harm at the hands of others’ neglect, and we make ourselves readily available to help anyone in the area after a preventable accident. If you have questions or would like to request a free consultation, contact us today.
